On Exploiting Task Duplication in Parallel Program Scheduling

چکیده
Abstract One of the main obstacles in obtaining high performance from message-passing multicomputer systems is the inevitable communication overhead which is incurred when tasks executing on different processors exchange data. Given a task graph, duplication-based scheduling can mitigate this overhead by allocating some of the tasks redundantly on more than one processors. In this paper, we focus on the problem of using duplication in static scheduling of task graphs on parallel and distributed systems. We discuss five previously proposed algorithms, and examine their merits and demerits. We describe some of the essential principles for exploiting duplication in a more useful manner, and based on these principles propose an algorithm which outperforms the previous algorithms. The proposed algorithm generates optimal solutions for a number of task graphs. The algorithm assumes an unbounded number of processors. For scheduling on a bounded number of processors, we propose a second algorithm which controls the degree of duplication according to the number of available processors. The proposed algorithms are analytically and experimentally evaluated and are also compared with the previous algorithms.

متن کاملExploiting duplication to minimize the execution times of parallel programs on message-passing systems
Communication overhead is one of the main factors that can limit the speedup of parallel programs on message-passing parallel architectures. This limiting factor is more predominant in distributed systems such as clusters of homogeneous or heterogeneous workstations. However, excessive communication overhead can be reduced by redundantly executing some of the tasks of a parallel program on whic...
متن کاملA New Approach to Scheduling Parallel Programs Using Task Duplication
1 In this paper, we explore the problem of scheduling parallel programs using task duplication for message-passing multicomputers. Task duplication means scheduling a parallel program by redundantly executing some of the tasks on which other tasks of the program critically depend. This can reduce the start times of tasks waiting for messages from tasks residing in other processors. There have b...

Task graph scheduling is the important factor which occurs in the multiprocessor system. There is problem solving technique called NP complete which is the optimal scheduling of parallel tasks with some precedence relationship onto parallel machines and can be solved only by using heuristic approach. The execution time requirements of the applications tasks are assumed to be stochastic. Genetic...
متن کاملAn Algorithm for Task Scheduling in Heterogeneous Distributed Systems Using Task Duplication
Task scheduling in heterogeneous parallel and distributed computing environment is a challenging problem. Applications identified by parallel tasks can be represented by directed-acyclic graphs (DAGs). Scheduling refers to the assignment of these parallel tasks on a set of bounded heterogeneous processors connected by high speed networks. Since task assignment is an NP-complete problem, instead...
